Will, I believe it is important to have ICT qualification in order to teach it. It's like any other subject where you as a facilitator is required to know the content of the subject.
Its possible to know how a computer operates but if one cannot explain to learners then definitely a qualification is needed.

I did mean ICT qualification rather than just IT. There's a lot in the ICT curriculum about the process of creating/ designing/ producing information. I just wondered whether there was a course designed to get a non-specialist teacher up to speed with the ICT curriculum and how to deliver it.

I am a student who has just finished my second year of ITT. I have no ICT qualifications, so I am currently taking the ECDL qualification (European Computer Driving Licence), which I feel should benefit me in the future.

Naace (www.naace.org) is working on developing qualifications which will enable teachers involved with ICT to gain accreditation for their knowledge and skills. There is a course for ICT Coordinators already running and an ICT Quality Mark for Education Professionals is being developed - the details of this are currently on the members area of the Naace website so that Naace members can comment.

Naace is of course already running many professional development courses and activities and will soon be getting many of these online for ease of access.

I have always seen the matter of additional qualifications being an issue of career development. Every course attended goes instantly onto one's CV and where these are accredited, so much the better.

ECDL info can be found at http://www.bcs.org/server.php?show=nav.5829
or search google for ECDL.

There are lots of training providers for it, check with your local council or Learn Direct office as they probably do courses.

ECDL is quite good for your own info but if you are looking for teaching help I would definitely look at NAACE as they are a very good, supportive organisation.

I have posted a series of booklets supporting the main MS Office products on the Teacher Resource Exchange. See http://tre.ngfl.gov.uk/server.php?request=cmVzb3VyY2UuZnVsbHZpZXc%3D&resourceId=12420

(These are based around the ECDL syllabus)
