hey ross
you will need to register with the state government depatments of education to do supply teaching and then just rock up to a school where ever you happen to be and give them a resume, let them know you want some supply. Catholic schools go see the principal directly.
western suburbs sydney and western districts nsw always want teachers but fairly rough areas.
if i can help any further email me.

Hi, I hope you dont mind me asking, I am coming to the end of my teaching degree in the UK and will be ariving in Sydney on the 1st December 2005.

As I have only done my PGCE year and not the year in school will I still be able to do supply teaching in Aus? If so do you know of any agencies I could join to help?

Thank you for your time, Dan (UK)

Hi! Would like to know if you went through an agency to help set you up in a job before you went to Australia? If so, do you have a website address or any other contact details for me?

Hi
I'm a primary school teacher and am planning to go out to Sydney in early February and hoping to get work teaching primary for 4-5 months. I'd really like to know if there's anything I can do to organise this from the UK. Also, am wondering what the teaching market in like in Sydney at the moment. Is it difficult to get supply work? Any information / recommendations etc massively appreciated
Cheers

Hi there!

I'm a primary school teacher heading to Australia (Melbourne) in January 2006 for a year. I was hoping if someone was willing to give me some advice and answer some questions that I have?

(1) What visa do teachers apply for?
(2) How do you get your qualifications verified?
(3) Are you able to apply for full time temporary posts before you arrive or can you apply for them when you are out there or are you only allowed to do supply work?

Has anyone taught in Melbourne? i would really appreciate any help from anyone who taught in australia and can advise me of the necessary steps to take to enable me to do the same.

i have searched the internet but there is just so much, i just want to know the all the steps to take before i go. also, was it difficult to get supply work or long term work whilst you were there?

many thanks in advance

Hi, again yes i appear to be in the same situation - trying to find out whether an NQT can teach in Australia. The information i've received so far appears to imply that yes as long as you have a pgce and received qts at the end, then you can as there is no induction year requirement over there - but to be honest my heads spinning with all the information out there. Can any one confirm whether this is the case, I'd really appreciate any emails with advice or info on the subject.

Thanks, Sam.

Hi guys, just some thoughts on working in Australia. How you approach this will depend on what state or territory you want to teach in - each system is quite seperate.

I am a Victorian teacher so pretty much can only advise on the system that I know. Here are a few pointers.

1. In order to teach in VIctoria you need to be registered with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (V.I.T. All their forms, etc. are available on their website at www.vit.vic.edu.au. You most likely need to fill out 'form A'which you can access from the forms link quite easily. That should help you with what documentation, etc. to pick up. They will give you a registration number which you then proivide any school that you apply to.

2. Supply work in Australia is CRT work (Casual Relief Teacher). It is pretty different to the UK as it isn't run by agencies. The best thing you can do to secure CRT work is to have a good resume, work out where you are living and hand it out directly to schools in the area, telling them what you are looking for. The pay is heaps better if you don't go through an agency as well.

3. If you want to see what work is available for long term teaching in victoria, go to www.sofweb.vic.edu.au and work through the following links
Teachers
Careers + job
Current job vacancies
View current vacancies (other job seekers)
Then, simply fill in job title and subject. This database has all public teaching jobs in the state listed on it. You apply directly to a school for a job, no need to go through boards, etc. by resume and selection criteria. If you are looking for a job in the private sector go to www.theage.com.au (newspaper site) and search under the careers section. (Be aware that public in Australia means government funded)

4. I'm not sure what an 'induction year' is, but to qualify for teaching we have your basic degree and education year (dip-ed I think is NQT) But I'm get confused by the jargon.

Hope this info doesn't sound patronising, but having moved from Australia to teach in the UK, I understand how confusing differnt jargon can be!

Best of luck.
